HOLT BREWERY PUBLIC HOUSES

“It would be easy to build another Pyramid of Giza or another Great Wall. But these buildings haven’t withstood the test of time because of their building quality. They stand tall because they have a symbolic value, they represent a culture.” Zhang Xin

Reflecting on the public houses of the past and their inherent, sometimes infamous stories, we are offered a window into time and a unique view of past history and pub culture. The Holt pubs were no exception, representing a microcosm of larger society and covering so many different facets. Despite the actual loss of so many pubs and historical buildings, a large number of  photographs and stories have survived.

As a tribute to the Fulford Brewers and the Holt Brewery, many of their public houses have been featured and  listed alphabetically in the latter part of this chapter. They have indeed ‘withstood the test of time’.

ARCHITECTURAL LANDMARKS:

There are a huge range and variety of buildings, some ancient, some Grade ll listed and some ‘lost giants’ such as The Stork which once towered over Corporation Street in central Birmingham. A range of outstanding buildings displaying extraordinary feats of architectural prowess. Buildings of great stature and design, some of which still stand and operate today. Others sadly lost at great cost to our cultural heritage.

THE OLDE CROWN
INN
  Moat Lane, Digbeth c.1368

The Crown is the “Sole surviving secular building of medieval Birmingham“ (Wikipedia).

Above from the frieze of tiles in nearby Aston Hall showing Cavaliers walking in front of the Olde Crown.

It is rumored that Queen Elizabeth 1st stayed overnight at The Crown in 1575 and that there used to be a secret passage running to and from the cellars beneath The Crown to nearby Aston Hall.

THE TALBOT c.1531  20 (24) High St, Moat Lane, Digbeth

In 1871, William Hutton, (Birmingham’s first historian), reported that ‘John Cooper’ (See Joseph Fulford, 1812) was living at the Talbot, 20 High Street, 250 years prior. This would render The Talbot in existence c.@ 1531.

The pub was bombed during WWll leaving only the ground floor but Ansells’s continued to trade from this building until the 1960’s. It was then demolished, the pub licence and it’s name given to another nearby pub which was later renamed Bull Ring Tavern. Courtesy: Lost pubs project

SOCIAL CLIMATE:

Pubs and their culture may be viewed as a representation of wider society, encapsulating different themes and trends indicative of that particular time in history. Public houses were often named after important events or nearby industry. As such, public houses have their own established place in history and act as markers of such times, trends and social events. For example, those in the Gun Quarter or the Jewelry Quarter of Birmingham. This was particularly the case in industrial Birmingham and again the Holt pubs were no exception.

GUNMAKERS ARMS

Situated in the old Gun Quarter and is now the ‘tap’ of the Two Towers Brewery.

COACH MAKERS ARMS
Named after Saltley stage coach makers in 1862 which employed 1,300 people.  Photograph can be viewed at midlandspubs.co.Uk

SAILOR’S RETURN, Watery Lane, demolished 1970’s/80s.

The pub was built by the vicar of Aston, Dr Spencer for a sailor named John Parkes who had served under the command of the Vicars officer son in the Battle of the Nile in 1798

THE GLOBE

The pub operated by Edwin Fulford (1822) was tenanted by famous screen writers  who were aboard the Lusitania, sunk by a German torpedo, and narrowly escaped with their lives. See Edwin Fulford  (1822) The Globe.

MORALITY AND SOCIAL CONSCIENCE:

The general ethos of the public houses often reflected the moral standards and social conscience of that particular period in history.

HOLT BREWERY

The Holt Brewery was operated by three generations of Fulford fathers and their sons (see Holt Lineage). In 1902 the Holt Brewery introduced the “Drunkards and Wayward Women”, ‘Black Book’. This book advertised drunkards and ‘wayward’ characters who were banned due to a variety of often repeated misdemeanors who subsequently suffered heavy penalty violations for reentry into the 250 plus Holt public houses.(See Holt Brewery).

BARTON ARMS

Within The Barton Arms and similar public houses of this time, there were divisions and separate areas where those considered more prestigious and of wealthier social standing could pay a bit extra for a beer and be separated by a ‘smoke screen’ from those unable to pay or considered less entitled. The Barton Arms original ‘smoke screens’ are possibly the last remaining in Birmingham today. There were also secret ‘snug’ rooms where men could hide and women could enjoy a secret ‘tipple’. During this period of history, it was considered ‘improper’ for ‘ladies’ to be seen in public houses. Such views would not be tolerated in our modern society but at the time attempted to preserve a form of ‘public decency’.

Comedians, Charlie Chaplin visited and Laurel and Hardy  were reported to have stayed overnight and ‘pulled pints’ at The Barton Arms during their last world tour. The pub was also frequented by Black Sabbath and other famous people (see Thomas Fulford, 1818).

MUSIC :

Birmingham provided an energetic and fertile ground for many developing musicians and bands who went on to achieved subsequent international fame and notoriety. Abundant music scenes provided venues to initiate and promote now famous musical artists and comedians.

HOLT BREWERY, now THE GOSTA GREEN

The Holt Brewery, subsequently became a pub with a series of name changes (see Holt Brewery). The premises now the Gosta Green has been a renowned music venue with bands like Blur and Pop Will Eat Itself playing there during the 1980s and early 90s.

GOLDEN EAGLE, HILL STREET

This pub, sadly now demolished, was an established  live music venue in the 1930’s

Spencer Davis met brothers Steve Winwood (age 14) and Muff Winwood and together they formed the Muffy Wood Jazz band. Later they performed their debut here and had an ongoing residency as the Spencer Davis Group with Steve Winwood on keyboards.  They produced iconic hits such as Gimme Some  Lovin’ and Keep on Running and Steve Winwood went on to be an internationally acclaimed solo musical artist.

Iron Maiden and U2 also played at the Golden Eagle prior to their international success.

In 1973 the pub housed Birmingham Folk /Rock group Scotch Mist and many other folk groups.

Pete King operated a club night ‘Shoop Shoop’ from 1976-1979 and went on to manage Steel Pulse.

In 2018 Two Towers Brewery launched a Golden Eagle Ruby ale in their ‘Gone but Not Forgotten’ range to commemorate the loss of the pub.

BEARWOOD HOTEL Bearwood Rd, Smethwick

“Many locals still use the term ‘The Bear’ especially referring to ‘The Bear Hotel’ located in Bearwood. An old map of the 18th century mentions ‘The Bear of Smethwick’ (Wikipedia).

Thin Lizzy played NYE 1970 and Judas Priest April 1971.

Christine McVie Fleetwood Mac grew up in Bearwood and is Bearwoods  main musical claim to fame. Christine Perfect (later Christine McVie) studied sculpture at art college in Birmingham. She joined Fleetwood Mac and married  John McVie in 1970.

There were also Comedy nights in the 1980s hosted by local comedian Frank Skinner (Chris Collins) and many other television comedians appeared there, including Sean Hughes, Ed Byrne and some of TV’s ‘The Fast Show’. (Wikipedia).

VIOLENT EVENTS:

Public houses can often be the setting for violent events. Intoxicated individuals lose control of their behavior and become involved in dangerous and aggressive acts. Such events may lead to fines, incarceration and sometimes untimely deaths (see Edwin Fulford (1822) The Globe).

COMET THE OLD BULL RING

In 1886 Josiah Clarke landlord of the Comet went to the Turks Head Inn, Steelhouse Lane, already drunk and demanding payment of a debt of 2s.8d. He refused to leave and threatened to bite off the landlady’s nose but instead bit her finger. He then assaulted two others working in the pub whilst being thrown out and was subsequently fined £5.
