Thomas J Fulford (1847) son of Henry Fulford (1818- 1889) is listed at ‘Beer house, Bordesley’ with wife Harriet Elizabeth nee ‘Cooke” (1847) and daughter Mary Elizabeth (1870). It is uncertain which ‘Beer House’ in Bordesley this refers to, either 1 Barr St, continuing the license from uncle Thomas Fulford (1817-1882) or another premises , such as Bordesley Tavern (228 Bordesley Green) or the Minerva Tavern in Bordesley Street.

In 1881, Henry Fulford (1818), aged 62, Widower married Eliza Chatwin (1827-1891) née Nicholls aged 56, Widower, on 9 July 1881 at Christ Church, Sparkbrook. Henry’s father, John Fulford’s occupation, is listed as Brewer.
Eliza was previously Henry’s house servant.

Eliza Fulford (1827-1891) died in 1891 aged 64 and had been married to Henry for 10 years. (Reference; Thompson Family Tree; Ancestry).

Four of the 15 public houses listed on Summer Lane were Holt Brewery public houses, owned and operated by Henry Charles Fulford (1823) who was succeeded by son Henry Charles Fulford (1850).
Two more of those listed public houses were operated by Fulford relatives, The Woolpack by John Joseph Fulford (1847) and The Vine, Henry Fulford (1818-1889).
No. 8. The Vine, situated on the junction of The Lane and New John St, was the only pub, of the fifteen listed below, without a corner location.
The map illustrates the close proximity of Summer Lane to Great Hampton Row and Mott street where Henry’s brother Joseph Fulford (1812) had the Minerva Brewery and the Minerva Vaults public house.

6. The Stags Head, 79 & 80 Summer Lane and corner of Brearley St. The building is still there and now closed but was still operating as a public house in 2010.

Note the proximity of John Fulford (1819-1877) who was the licensee of the Leopard Inn, 142 Brearley St from 1867-1883 (Reference Kelly’s directory), alongside other Fulfords living on Brearley St (for more information see Thomas Fulford (1817-1882) The Barton Arms.
