SAMUEL FULFORD (1851-1820). GREAT GRANDFATHER 🦁
Samuel ‘The Lion’ Fulford, Great Grandfather is the last in our direct line of Fulford ancestors to uphold the family tradition of brewing.
Samuel produced primarily mineral water and soft drinks, with the addition of cider and winter stout, which I presume were alcoholic.
Most of the S Fulford Bottles of 34a Plymouth Grove, ‘The Lion Mineral Works’, Manchester, have a Lion moulded into the bottle or printed onto the design, as with the ceramic ginger beer bottles.
The story of Samuel began in Birmingham where he was born to Mary Ann Juxon (1811-1872) Great Great Grandmother and Joseph Fulford (1812-1868) Great Great Grandfather.
Joseph was also a Brewer and Publican in Birmingham at his Minerva Brewery and the Minerva Vaults public house.
The family moved from Birmingham at some time between 1852 and 1861, to Manchester. A move most likely prompted by Joseph’s bankruptcy.
Samuel had 11 siblings and some details of their stories I have documented, including information from other relatives now discovered.
Samuel married Elizabeth Hind Chesworth (1860-1898) Great Grandmother in 1872 and they had 7 children including Sydney Fulford (1894-1851) Grandfather. After Elizabeth’s death in 1898 Samuel remarried Elizabeth ‘Lizzie’ Woodward (1870) Step Great Grandmother, who was 19 years his junior and had 4 more children.
In Manchester William Henry Fulford (1844-1909) Great Uncle, (Samuels older brother) owned and operated the Empress Brewery, with its 236 associated public houses and outlets. Samuel, the youngest son chose to produce mineral water and soft drinks but was undoubtedly involved and influenced by his older brothers, father, uncles, great uncles, grandfather and great grandfather who were also involved in the brewing industry.
Census records which began in 1841 and are now available currently up to 1911. The Census records provide information relating to residence, occupants, age, marriage, children and occupation. Information and pictorial evidence of the ‘Lion Mineral Works’ bottles and S Fulford bottles are highlighted.
Samuel is just one of a long line of Fulford maltsters, brewers and publicans.
